Joe Torre Quits Dodgers – Replaced By Don Mattingly – It appears that Joe Torre’s run as the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers have come to an end. It is now official that Don Mattingly will be taking over his post at the end of the season. Mattingly has been the team’s hitting coach throughout the year, and by all accounts has done a very good job in the position.
Mattingly has never worked as a manager before, but the team announced that he would be guiding them in the Arizona fall league. This fueled the speculation that was already out there that he would be taking over the club next season.
Torre reportedly is stepping down after managing the team for the last five seasons. Torre, who previously won a number of World Series titled with the New York Yankees has had a long, fulfilling hall of fame career and is eager to hang it up.
Executives with the team have said that they believe that Mattingly is ready to manage the team on a full time basis, and has been preparing for the role since he first came to the team in 2008. If there ever was anyone to learn under, it is Joe Torre. He has had success with a number of different clubs, and prior to parting nastily from the Yankees, he was considered to be the best manager in baseball. His career record is 2,318 – 1,990, making him the fifth most winning manager in the history of the game. Unfortunately, the Dodgers are currently 72-75 and appear to be on their way to missing the playoffs.
